Software Practice: Houdini

Vase shattering from bullet

For our first class with Houdini, we created a 3D vase and a bullet. We then animated the bullet to shoot through the vase, changing the entry and exit point of the shape to make the explosion look more realistic.

One issue I ran into was changing the bullet’s force because if it wasn’t strong enough, the vase wouldn’t shatter and would fly off in one piece.

Ball smashing through wall

Building on the idea of an object destroying another, we created a wall that gets smashed through by a sphere. The concept was to create bits and pieces that would fly away at different speeds and directions in a way that would look realistic from a set camera frame.

This is the texture provided for the wall.

Grass Simulation

For this exercise, we learned how to create a grass field from lines. We modified the grass color and length, factoring in gravity. We then added a shape to glide across the grass to make it seem like something is rustling, creating a more dynamic effect.
