Garage Project

This goal of this project is to create a 3D CG machine that would fill up the back of this room and some foreground with the same context of the machine.

Moodboard

For the garage project, I envisioned the backroom to be something that revealed a wall of TVs. Similar to the ending of a game that saw plays, but the main character runs out of time, and it’s game over.

Modelling

For modelling, I created one TV as the base, duplicated, and moved them around to form the wall of Televisions. I also experimented with curving the screen and adding wires to the back of the television.

Texturing

Here are the textures for the TV model. Originally, I wanted to add some dirt and dust around the edges of the screen, but I ended up not using this texture because I directly replaced the TV screen with live footage, which emitted a glow, and the dust details would not have been seen.

I colour-graded and sped up stock footage of horror themed videos in Davinci Resolve. I also tried to export the video directly as a png sequence in order to use it as a texture for the television screens but there was a formatting issue with Maya and so I had to convert the videos in After Effects instead.

This was how it looked after I placed all the png sequences into the model.

Tracking

Camera matchmove in Maya

I imported the FBX of the TV models inside the Nuke 3D space to place them in the scene. I then exported the camera into Maya to use as a camera to render the TV models with the texture and animations.

I placed the model in the second room as my machine.

Initially, I wanted to render the Maya videos with a green light. I tested it out to match my moodboard. However, I felt that it would be more difficult to match the garage lighting, and it would be easier to color-grade everything altogether, so I decided against this.

I used the HDRI provided to match the lighting in the Maya render, adding a floor plane and a wall plane for shadows and reflections.

I rendered the footage as an exr so that I could have multiple AOV passes to have more control over the colour of the model inside of Nuke.

AOV Colour Grading

After plugging in the AOVs into the separate shuffles, I made minor tweaks to each pass until it matched the colour of the garage.

There was an issue I came across which was the model was being a little shaky, and I was able to fix it by double checking the framerate and matching the maya render to 25fps instead of 24fps.
